چکیده

A simple unified model of intrinsic rotation and momentum transport in high confinement regime H-mode tokamak plasmas is presented. Motivated by the common dynamics of the onset of intrinsic rotation and the L-H transition, this simple model combines E B shear-driven residual stress in the pedestal with a turbulent equipartition pinch to yield rotation profiles. The residual stress is the primary mechanism for buildup of intrinsic rotation in the H-mode pedestal, while the pinch drives on-axis peaking of rotation profiles. Analytical estimates for pedestal flow velocities are given in terms of the pedestal width, the pedestal height, and various model parameters. The predicted scaling of the toroidal flow speed with pedestal width is found to be consistent with the International Tokamak Physics Activity database global scaling of the flow speed on-axis with the total plasma stored energy. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3339909

Experimental observations of driven and intrinsic rotation in tokamak plasmas

Experimental observations of driven and intrinsic rotation in tokamak plasmas are reviewed. For momentum sources, there is direct drive from neutral beam injection, lower hybrid and ion cyclotron range of frequencies waves (including mode conversion flow drive), as well as indirect j B × forces from fast ion and electron orbit shifts, and toroidal magnetic field ripple loss. Counteracting rotat...

Spontaneous rotation and momentum transport in tokamak plasmas

Recently there has been widespread attention paid to rotation and momentum transport in tokamak plasmas. Of particular interest is spontaneous (intrinsic) toroidal rotation in plasmas without external momentum input. The strong co-current spontaneous rotation in enhanced confinement regimes, with ion thermal Mach numbers up to 0.3, may allow for resistive wall mode suppression in high-pressure ...

Rotation reversal bifurcation and energy confinement saturation in tokamak Ohmic L-mode plasmas.

Direction reversals of intrinsic toroidal rotation have been observed in diverted Alcator C-Mod Ohmic L-mode plasmas following electron density ramps. For low density discharges, the core rotation is directed cocurrent, and reverses to countercurrent following an increase in the density above a certain threshold. Such reversals occur together with a decrease in density fluctuations with 2 cm(-1...

Turbulent momentum pinch of diamagnetic flows in a tokamak

The diamagnetic flow due to the radial pressure and temperature gradients and the E × B flow due to the radial electric field induce different turbulent momentum fluxes in a tokamak. As a result, when the diamagnetic and E × B flows cancel giving zero net toroidal rotation, there will still be finite momentum transport. This may be particularly important near the plasma–wall boundary where a st...

Density sensitivity of intrinsic rotation profiles in ICRF-heated L-mode plasmas

The physical mechanisms that cause tokamak plasmas to rotate toroidally without external momentum input are of considerable interest to the plasma physics community. This paper documents a substantial change in both the magnitude of the core rotation frequency, -3 < ω(r/a=0) < +10 kHz, and the sign of rotation shear at mid-radius, u’=-Rdω/dr/vth,i,, which varies between -0.6 < u’ < +0.8 in resp...
